Studio Visit - Yang Qiu - Albatross Ceramic

During my recent trip to Sydney, I had the joy of revisiting my friend Yang Qiu at her ceramic studio, @albatross_ceramic. Every visit to her space feels like stepping into a whimsical, alternate world — one where vegetables have legs, ceramics wear smiles, and playfulness meets craftsmanship.

Yang Qiu

(b. China, living in Sydney, Australia)

Yang brings a unique perspective to her practice, shaped by her background as a pastry chef and her Fine Arts degree from UNSW. Her work explores the intersection of food, form, and function, using mould-making and slip-casting techniques to transform everyday fruits and vegetables into characterful ceramic objects. Her pieces blur the line between utility and sculpture, inviting both interaction and delight.

We had a lovely catch-up over tea, chatted about life as working artists, the realities of sustaining a creative practice, and I got a preview of her latest works in progress. I also learned how to make moulds from her—truly valuable time spent in her studio.
