The sensibilities of the Japanese people are born from Japan's natural environment. The changing seasons; spring, summer, autumn, and winter—have a profound influence on this sensibility. Particularly in waka poetry, many poems are composed about the ma (intervals or transitions) between seasons. This idea of ma is also shared with the philosophy of tea ceremony. Ma is a core concept in Japanese culture, and believe that this uniquely Japanese sensibility will gain greater attention in the 21st century. Crafts and fine art play an essential role in conveying this.
