Mr. Kitayama’s woodworking journey began when he discovered the woodturning lathe. From that moment, he immersed himself in the craft, learning through self-study and embracing each challenge with curiosity and joy. His signature technique involves applying plant-based dyes, traditionally used for textiles, to wood. His camellia-dyed works reveal a deep, translucent black that allows the wood grain to softly emerge. The surface holds a gentle sheen, reflecting light with quiet elegance. The pieces evoke a sense of strength and grace, combining the stillness of metal with the warmth of wood. Each curve and detail reflects his careful craftsmanship. When held, the smooth texture and balanced weight reveal his thoughtful approach and dedication. Kitayama also carefully selects his materials, using rare woods like black persimmon and featuring natural patterns such as burl and bird’s eye grain. This is his first solo exhibition after a two-person show three years ago. Each piece has been created with time and care. We invite you to visit and experience the work in person.
